game drive one (balule nature reserve, kruger national park)

Game drive number one got us up close to action nearly immediately out of our lodge. We came across a young bull elephant, and then a "memory" of females drinking at a water hole.

Then we rushed off to catch a glimpse of two black rhinos gallivanting around.

A short while later, we were astounded to see a female lion and her cubs. The dark night made for few pictures.

Our week on "safari" was off to a great start - and it got even better!

The orange stripe on his ear is likely mud that has rubbed off from rubbing on a tree.

Elephant tail!

Checking us out. He was about 8-10 feet away at the closest point.

A female and male waterbuck. These animals are around the size of a white-tailed deer, but smell strongly because they have a coating on their fur, similar to ducks, that allows water to roll off.

Nearly mating time

Another astounding elephant sighting! All these ladies (a couple may have been young bulls) were gathered around to have a drink.

Little guy takes a rest.

Even littler guy tries to squeeze in!

Three sisters

The two black rhinos! Sorry for poor photo quality.

We were impressed with our guide Sipho and his ability to spot tiny things in the dark from very far away in a moving car, like this owl (approx. six inches tall).

"Limpi," a female lion so named because of her limp. She had been separated from her pride back in November when they went across the Oliphants River, leaving her and her two young cubs. She's been hunting on her own and communicating with her pride since then, sticking close to the river. This night we were lucky to hear her calling out to her pride, and turning to listen for their response.
